private member in declared class

declare class A {
    private o : number;
}
What can be a purpose allowing this ?
You cannot access the member anyway.

I believe it comes from knowing the set of privates on a class you don't have access to allows you to avoid things like name collisions when you subclass.

Collision is good reason.
